Pagasa: ‘Emong’ to enter RP Wednesday or Thursday

MANILA, Philippines - While Tuesday’s predawn rains were not due to any tropical cyclone, residents might have to brace for a tropical storm that will enter Philippine territory this week.The Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) said the cyclone will be named “Emong" once it enters the country.


“Inaasahang ito sa mga susunod na araw ito ay papasok sa western periphery ng Philippine Area of Responsibility ... Ang maaapektuhan nito Northern Luzon [We expect it to come in through the western area. At its present speed and direction, it will hit Northern Luzon]," Pagasa forecaster Bernie de Leon said in an interview on dzBB radio.When asked when it will enter Philippine territory, he said “Wednesday or Thursday.


"The coming cyclone, which is considered a tropical storm, packs winds of 64 to 117 kph, he said.Pagasa director Prisco Nilo, in a separate interview, indicated “Emong" is even likely to make landfall during the weekend.“Maaring mag-landfall ito sa Friday this week [It may make landfall Friday this week]," he said in an interview on dzXL radio.Meanwhile, Pagasa said that as of 2 a.m. Tuesday, “Dante" was estimated at 840 km east-northeast of Casiguran in Aurora province with maximum sustained winds of 130 kph near the center and gustiness of up to 160 kph.It is forecast to move east-northeast at 22 kph.“Sa pangkasalukuyang takbo niya e bukas ng umaga, ito ay lalabas ng Philippine Area of Responsibility [At its present speed and direction, it will exit Philippine territory Wednesday morning]," De Leon said.


Pagasa said Southern Luzon and Visayas will experience mostly cloudy skies with scattered rainshowers and thunderstorms.The rest of the country will be partly cloudy to at times cloudy with isolated rainshowers or thunderstorms mostly in the afternoon or evening.Moderate to strong winds blowing from the Northeast will prevail over Northern Luzon with moderate to rough seas.


Light to moderate winds blowing from the northeast to Northwest will prevail over the rest of Luzon and coming from the southwest over Visayas and Mindanao.Coastal waters along these areas will be slight to moderate. - GMANews.TV
