This doesn't mean i am deactivating this (e-Revenue) blog. I will be posting stuff here also from time to time.

Let's face it ladies. The fight’s not fair in the business world.
We may be picking away at the salary gap but we still only earn 77 cents to every man’s dollar, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. And despite filling more seats at business school, fewer than 3 percent of Fortune 1000 CEOs are women.
So how does bias run rampant in the boardroom?
Long story short, men and women are judged, rewarded, and even punished differently for doing the same job. Unjustified and unfair? Yes. But the harsh reality remains. The only way to climb the corporate ladder is to recognize how men control the power and alter your behavior accordingly. You’ve got to play the game to get to the top. Here are a few common stereotypes, misperceptions and actions that encourage or maintain gender inequity.
Men are assertive. Women are aggressive.
It’s a hustle to the top, and the male-female power struggle usually leaves women with the short end of the sword. Males are raised to be cocky and competitive but if a woman dares adopt this “go-getter” attitude, she risks being branded as domineering and difficult. Macho men have a vested interest in keeping women reserved and compliant so they’re quick to call out a bold, budding female executive. There’s a fine line between scrappiness and combativeness — one that men rarely have to walk.
Men are passionate. Women are emotional.
There’s no crying in the boardroom. Alpha males pounce on a sensitive woman like it’s their job. But I’m not just talking about a massive meltdown in the middle of a meeting. Everyday emotions get misconstrued. For example, if a man gets irate and defensive over a differing opinion, he’s applauded for being steadfast and strong. When a woman raises her voice or offers a critique, she’s the disagreeable hothead of the group.
Men scream. Women mutter.
Effective communication is the only way to get ahead. But it’s hard to get a leg up if you’re never heard. Women are too easily drowned out by men’s more emphatic, direct speech, so pick up the bullhorn and demand attention. Tone is crucial but your expressions are equally important. Instead of taking the timid route — like asking everything in the form of a question — ditch the wishy-washy language and speak with conviction. If you don’t have the courage, fake it. Sit up straight, make eye contact, and jump in.
Men steer. Women support.
More often than not, women scrap any chance of progressing into leadership roles by languishing in assisting positions. Continuously volunteering for extra work and never telling colleagues “no” chains you in a supportive role. Those feminine characteristics that make you a great secretary — compassion, attentiveness — will make you a stellar CEO. Wrench yourself out of your comfort zone and enter the fray. Make a threatened male fight for that corner office.
Men are casual. Women are coquettes.
There's nothing like Casual Friday to magnify the differences in the way men and women are perceived. While men can roll up in khakis and a t-shirt, most casual wear remains taboo for the opposite sex. Wear a skirt instead of a pantsuit, too high of heels or splashy makeup and suddenly you’re the office “floozy,” unfit for a leadership role. Your clothing is scrutinized more so than men’s. And unfortunately, your female counterparts are doing a lot of the eyeballing.
So what’s an ambitious woman to do?
Knowing that office gender politics still exist is half the battle but there are things you can do to break into the boy’s club. Read our 6 tips on Excelle!

LONDON - Cocoa-rich dark chocolate could be prescribed for people with liver cirrhosis in future, following the latest research to show potential health benefits of chocolate.
Spanish researchers said Thursday that eating dark chocolate capped the usual after-meal rise in abdominal blood pressure, which can reach dangerous levels in cirrhotic patients and, in severe cases, lead to blood vessel rupture.
Antioxidants called flavanols found in cocoa are believed to be the reason why chocolate is good for blood pressure because the chemicals help the smooth muscle cells of the blood vessels to relax and widen.
A study of 21 patients with end-stage liver disease found those given a meal containing 85 percent-cocoa dark chocolate had a markedly smaller rise in blood pressure in the liver, or portal hypertension, than those given white chocolate.
"This study shows a clear association between eating dark chocolate and portal hypertension and demonstrates the potential importance of improvements in the management of cirrhotic patients," said Mark Thursz, a professor of hepatology at London's Imperial College.
The results were presented at the annual meeting of the European Association for the Study of the Liver in Vienna and follow a number of earlier scientific studies suggesting that dark chocolate also promotes heart health.
Cirrhosis is scarring of the liver as a result of long-term damage. It is caused by various factors, including hepatitis infection and alcohol abuse.

It's me singing a cover of the song "Bulag, Pipi at Bingi (Blind, Mute and Deaf), original by Mr. Fredie Aguilar. This heart-felt song that touched us Filipinos in the late 70's is about sight, speech and hearing impaired ones. It is indeed an honor singing this song for them who need us who have the eyes that can see, the lips that can sing and the ears that can hear beautiful music. Me myself is an advocate of this kind of impairment since I was diagnosed also of Glaucoma in the eyes, that I might get blind in early 40's.... God bless us all. CHICAGO - Four common bad habits combined — smoking, drinking too much, inactivity and poor diet — can age you by 12 years, sobering new research suggests.
The findings are from a study that tracked nearly 5,000 British adults for 20 years, and they highlight yet another reason to adopt a healthier lifestyle.
Overall, 314 people studied had all four unhealthy behaviors. Among them, 91 died during the study, or 29 percent. Among the 387 healthiest people with none of the four habits, only 32 died, or about 8 percent.
The risky behaviors were: smoking tobacco; downing more than three alcoholic drinks per day for men and more than two daily for women; getting less than two hours of physical activity per week; and eating fruits and vegetables fewer than three times daily.
These habits combined substantially increased the risk of death and made people who engaged in them seem 12 years older than people in the healthiest group, said lead researcher Elisabeth Kvaavik of the University of Oslo.
The study appears in Monday's Archives of Internal Medicine.
The healthiest group included never-smokers and those who had quit; teetotalers, women who had fewer than two drinks daily and men who had fewer than three; those who got at least two hours of physical activity weekly; and those who ate fruits and vegetables at least three times daily.
"You don't need to be extreme" to be in the healthy category, Kvaavik said. "These behaviors add up, so together it's quite good. It should be possible for most people to manage to do it."
For example, one carrot, one apple and a glass of orange juice would suffice for the fruit and vegetable cutoffs in the study, Kvaavik said, noting that the amounts are pretty modest and less strict than many guidelines.
The U.S. government generally recommends at least 4 cups of fruits or vegetables daily for adults, depending on age and activity level; and about 2 1/2 hours of exercise weekly.

How to tell if a guy is still hanging onto his old relationship – and what you can do to help him move on. (Kathryn H. Cusimano, BettyConfidential.com)
Do you ever get the feeling that there are three people in your relationship – you, your guy and his ex? Does he still talk or email with her often? Or maybe he holds an unhealthy grudge, or seems preoccupied with what she’s doing now? If any of these scenarios sound familiar, it may mean that he hasn’t completely let go yet. How can you tell if he’s not really over his ex? Tina B. Tessina, PhD, psychotherapist and author of Money, Sex and Kids: Stop Fighting About the Three Things That Can Ruin Your Marriage offers five warning signs:
1. He wasted no time before jumping into his next relationship. If you started dating this guy shortly after his latest breakup, there’s a good chance he’s not completely over his ex – no matter what he says. “There are hopes and dreams we have when we get into a relationship that we lose when we lose that relationship,” says Tessina. “It takes some time [to get over those things].” She points out that men often avoid the grieving process that follows a breakup, even though it can be instrumental in helping them assess the relationship and move on. “You want to be sure he can talk about it – that he can analyze it a little bit, and can say what went wrong and what went right and what part he played in what went wrong.” But even if he isn’t quite there, it doesn’t mean your relationship is doomed. As Tessina explains, “It just means you need to understand that he still has some processing to do, and he’s probably going to do some of it with you.”
Read Should You Friend Exes on Facebook?
2. He fell for you before his relationship ended. These are men like John Edwards and Tiger Woods, who tell you their previous relationships are over or broken, but they still go home to their wives or girlfriends. It sounds obvious, but these guys are bad news. “It doesn’t matter if he says the relationship is bad,” Tessina says. “He has a cheating mentality.” And if he cheats on her, he probably wouldn’t have a problem with cheating on you. Even if he does eventually leave his wife or girlfriend – a very big if, by the way -- and you’re willing to give it a go with this guy, he literally hasn’t had any time on his own to process the demise of that previous relationship so you could run into the same problems as in #1, above. Bottom line: This is probably not someone you want to be with.
3. When it comes to his ex, he only deals in extremes. If your new guy can’t say his ex’s name without spitting, this is another warning sign. “If he’s talking about her constantly, and she’s either the most wonderful thing in the world or the most terrible thing in the world, but it’s unrealistic, you need to ask him about his role in the relationship,” says Tessina. There are two people in every couple, and there’s no way his ex was as great or awful as he makes her sound. “If he’s not talking about it at all, you need to say ‘I think it’s valuable to for us to talk about our past relationships so we can see what went wrong and what we need to do differently in this relationship.’”

BEIJING – A series of strong earthquakes struck a mountainous Tibetan area of western China on Wednesday, killing at least 400 people and injuring more than 10,000 as houses made of mud and wood collapsed, officials said. Many more people were trapped, and the toll was expected to rise.
The largest quake was recorded by the U.S. Geological Survey as magnitude 6.9. In the aftermath, panicked people, many bleeding from their wounds, flooded the streets of a Qinghai province township where most of the homes had been flattened. Students were reportedly buried inside several damaged schools.
Paramilitary police used shovels to dig through the rubble in the town, footage on state television showed. Officials said excavators were not available. Crews worked to repair the damaged road to the nearest airport and clear the way for equipment and rescue teams. Hospitals were overwhelmed, many lacking even the most basic supplies, and doctors were in short supply.
By nightfall, the airport was operating with emergency power and receiving relief flights carrying medical workers and supplies, state media reported.
Downed phone lines, strong winds and frequent aftershocks hindered rescue efforts, said Wu Yong, commander of the local army garrison, who said the death toll "may rise further as lots of houses collapsed."
With many people forced outside, the provincial government said it was rushing 5,000 tents and 100,000 coats and blankets to the mountainous region, with an altitude of around 13,000 feet (4,000 meters) where night time temperatures plunge below freezing.
Workers were racing to release water from a reservoir in the disaster area where a crack had formed after the quake to prevent a flood, according to the China Earthquake Administration.
The Wednesday quake, which struck at 7:49 a.m. local time (2349 GMT, 7:49 p.m. EDT), was centered on Yushu county, in the southern part of Qinghai, near Tibet, with a population of about 100,000, mostly herders and farmers.
Lightly populated by Chinese standards, the region is remote, making the rescue operation logistically difficult. Relief flights, for example, need to carry in spare jet fuel to augment the limited supplies stored at Yushu's airport, the state-run Xinhua News Agency said.
The USGS recorded six temblors in less than three hours, all but one registering 5.0 or higher. The China Earthquake Networks Center measured the largest quake's magnitude at 7.1. Qinghai averages more than five earthquakes a year of at least magnitude 5.0, Xinhua said. They normally do not cause much damage.
Residents fled as the ground shook, toppling houses made of mud and wood, as well as temples, gas stations, electric poles and the top of a Buddhist pagoda in a park, witnesses and state media said. The quake also triggered landslides, Xinhua said.
"Nearly all the houses made of mud and wood collapsed. There was so much dust in the air, we couldn't see anything," said Ren Yu, general manager of Yushu Hotel in Jiegu, the county's main town. "There was a lot of panic. People were crying on the streets. Some of our staff, who were reunited with their parents, were also in tears." (Read more at below source)

ABS-CBN - Saturday, March 20
MANILA, Philippines -- The Filipino booters finally lived up to their “Miracle Team” billing with a huge 6-2 upset of Brazil last Thursday in the Deloitte Street Child World Cup indoor football tournament in Durban, South Africa.
Shrugging off a 0-2 loss to Tanzania 2 days ago, the RP squad, led by coach Jess Landagan, worked like a well-oiled soccer machine, surging to a 4-1 halftime lead before scoring two more goals in the next period in wrapping up the monumental win in front of a roaring South African gallery.
It marked the first time that the Philippines beat Brazil, a world football power, at the international level.
The victory boosted the team, co-managed by Craig Burrows of Britain, into the shield competition after finishing the Group B preliminaries with a 1-2 win-loss slate.
“We prayed for a breakthrough for the RP ‘Miracle Team,’ and it was answered in a big way with this win over the Brazilians,” said co-manager Ed Formoso, who again thanked British charity Angus Lawon Memorial Trust for making the stint possible.
Formoso also cited the Henry V. Moran Foundation, which staged the tryouts that led to the formation of a competitive squad to the South African soccer fest.
“It seems that Tinikling footwork beat Samba footwork,” noted RP women’s team skipper Marielle Benitez, when informed of the historic triumph Thursday night.
Benitez, a member of the world-famous Bayanihan dance troupe, earlier gave the RP members lessons in the popular folk dance that requires nimble feet between two bamboo poles as part of the team’s off-pitch extracurricular activities.
The Philippines next plays Ukraine on Friday (Saturday in Manila) with the winner taking on the victor of the other Shield semifinals between host South Africa and Brazil for the Shield Cup on Friday.

WASHINGTON – In a surprising discovery about where higher life can thrive, scientists for the first time found a shrimp-like creature and a jellyfish frolicking beneath a massive Antarctic ice sheet.
Six hundred feet below the ice where no light shines, scientists had figured nothing much more than a few microbes could exist.
That's why a NASA team was surprised when they lowered a video camera to get the first long look at the underbelly of an ice sheet in Antarctica. A curious shrimp-like creature came swimming by and then parked itself on the camera's cable. Scientists also pulled up a tentacle they believe came from a foot-long jellyfish.
"We were operating on the presumption that nothing's there," said NASA ice scientist Robert Bindschadler, who will be presenting the initial findings and a video at an American Geophysical Union meeting Wednesday. "It was a shrimp you'd enjoy having on your plate."
"We were just gaga over it," he said of the 3-inch-long, orange critter starring in their two-minute video. Technically, it's not a shrimp. It's a Lyssianasid amphipod, which is distantly related to shrimp.

PEORIA, Ariz. – Matt Stairs(notes) is fairly certain this will be his last season playing professional baseball. Check that. He’s only sort of sure. And truth be told, he can totally see himself playing next year and furthering the record he’s about to set.
“Every year around this time I say this is it, I’m done,” he said. “Then I come back. I thought Toronto was the last place I was going to be playing. That was two teams ago.”
The 42-year-old Stairs slipped into workout gear affixed with the San Diego Padres’ insignia. Baseball’s greatest nomad has worn more logos than Pepsi. If Stairs makes the Padres’ opening day roster, it will mark his 12th major league team, the most for a position player and testament to his unparalleled staying power.
His journey took him from Montreal to Boston to Oakland to Chicago to Milwaukee to Pittsburgh to Kansas City to Texas to Detroit to Toronto to Philadelphia, with stopovers in 11 more minor league cities and a stint in Japan, and now to San Diego, where he wants to scratch out another season as a pinch hitter. Pitchers Mike Morgan and Ron Villone(notes), owners of always-in-demand rubber arms, played for 12 teams apiece. A position player has never done that, unless you count catcher Deacon McGuire, who was with 11 teams and wore 12 uniforms. His 1891 Washington Statesmen became the Washington Senators the next year, and if McGuire was as pious as his nickname suggests, surely he’d cede the record to Stairs alone.

ARLINGTON, Texas – Joshua Clottey may have been bigger, but that was his only edge on Saturday night. Manny Pacquiao clearly outworked Clottey, outpunching him four, five and even six to one at times in winning a wide decision before a standing room-only crowd of 50,994 at Cowboys Stadium.
Pacquiao punished Clottey with combinations to the body throughout in winning the unanimous decision to retain his World Boxing Organization welterweight title and his status as the world’s finest boxer.
It was no contest as Clottey simply kept his guard high and rarely threw punches. According to CompuBox, Pacquiao landed 246 of 1,231 punches; Clottey connected on just 108 of 399.
Pacquiao took advantage by using his blazing hand speed to rip through Clottey’s gloves and land hard, punishing shots.
He made the former champion wince several times as he fired off hard combinations at Clottey’s midsection.
Despite the exhortations in the corner of trainer Lenny DeJesus, Clottey never opened up and fought aggressively. He was backed up all night and, except for an occasional shot, never did much to Pacquiao.
It was another virtuoso performance for the Filipino superstar who has won titles or has claimed the linear championship in seven different weight classes. Pacquiao is on a collision course with unbeaten rival Floyd Mayweather Jr., who fights Shane Mosley on May 1.

It's a one-of-a-kind mega-mansion, in fact it's the largest home in Los Angeles and on the market for $150 million. Today, Make Home a Haven takes you inside the 50,000-square-foot, French-inspired manor for a rare glimpse. Home to Candy Spelling, wife of the late TV mogul Aaron Spelling and mother to Tori. Candy calls it 'The Manor', we just call it spectacular! Also for the first time, Candy begins her role as a Shine blogger. Get to know the woman behind the mogul and read in her own words what she has to say about her special haven.
People have different expectations when they visit my home. What would you think if you were going to see the “largest home in Los Angeles,” and if you sometimes had to navigate around busloads of people on a “tour of stars’ homes” in order to get into the driveway? In my chronic state of insecurity, I wonder how my house could possibly live up to the expectations people have.
It wasn’t that long ago that I realized that other people’s expectations counted a whole lot less than how comfortable I was in my own home (does that make me a slow learner or proving that wisdom comes with age?). When Yahoo told me about its expanded focus to make home a haven, I realized that’s what I had been trying to do. They just put it into better words.

At long last, I’m in search for different artists who would contribute much to the wellness of our environment. Yes, you would need not to go farther ‘cause he’s just our very own Filipino exceptional artist – Mr. RAL ARROGANTE.
When I visited Shangri-La Plaza in Edsa-Shaw last Feb. 27, 2010 through Philippine International Visual Arts Festival 2010 (PIVAF), it was a drop-jaw moment seeing unbelievable creations by him.
Though at first you’d never know it was from a junk turning into something else like miniatures of planes, ships, houses, & etc. Even dragonflies or insects may be seen made out of coppers, wires, blinds and other less-fortunate junks (haha!).

VANCOUVER, British Columbia – Finally Canada owned the podium and in this instance at least, the Americans were happy to let them have it.
As Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir’s hometown heroics came under scrutiny with controversy raging over ice dance’s complicated judging system, the Canadian team’s primary source of support came from south of the border.
“Tessa and Scott did an incredible job,” said Tanith Belbin, who finished fourth with Ben Agosto. “It is very exciting for them and for Canada to win a gold medal at home and there aren’t many people who deserve this more.”
There was somewhat less graciousness from other athletes, including Italy’s Massimo Scali and Russia’s Maxim Shabalin.
“When you compete in your home country the crowd goes crazy and it can help the skaters,” said Scali, who placed fifth with his partner Federica Faiella. “I hope that it does not affect the judges.
“I don’t agree with the system. They [Virtue and Moir] are not real dancers. They are very technical and don’t really ‘dance’ on the ice.”
Bronze medalist Shabalin, who along with partner Oksana Domnina finished third in Monday’s free dance, also questioned the result, but there was nothing but support from Belbin and Agosto, and runners-up Meryl Davis and Charlie White, also Americans.
“The Canadians are our friends and it is an incredible achievement for them to win a gold medal,” White said. “The atmosphere of the crowd was amazing and they reacted to them. They are worthy winners.”
Virtue and Moir captured the hearts of the Pacific Coliseum audience with a sensational performance, which clinched victory by just under six points from Davis and White. (read more at below source)

Lionel Richie was rightfully hesitant to rerecord "We Are the World," the 1985 global anthem he wrote alongside Michael Jackson to fight famine in Africa.
More than 40 artists under the umbrella USA for Africa joined to record the tribute that raised more than $60 million.
Richie felt the song was iconic and should not be revisited, but he changed his mind after the recent devastation in Haiti following the tragic 7.0 earthquake in January that left more than 100,000 people dead and millions displaced.
The new version, "We Are the World - 25 for Haiti," and its video, which just premiered in advance of the broadcast of the Opening Ceremony for the Vancouver 2010 Olympics, successfully takes on a new meaning.

From the moment the remake performed by more than 70 artists called Artists For Haiti was announced, speculation set in as people wondered how contemporary artists would interpret the song. Richie and producer Quincy Jones decided not to feature artists who appeared on the original version.
Comparing the original to the 2010 rendition is inevitable in a few instances. Those who remember the first version can't help but think of Cyndi Lauper when they hear an emotional Celine Dion breathe new energy into the memorable, "well, well, well/let us realize, a change will only come" or when teen newcomer Justin Bieber takes on Richie's opening lines.
But the covers are not what stick in your mind after watching the eight-minute clip that opens with remarks from Jamie Foxx encouraging viewers to "do more than just watch but to reach deep in your heart and give anything you can."
For me, "We Are the World - 25 for Haiti" calls to mind the hopeful little boy in the sky blue T-shirt captured in the beginning of the video, standing on the roof of a dilapidated house, smiling and waving…. (Read more at below source)

Chickenpox is caused by the Varicella-Zoster virus (VZV, a double stranded DNA herpesvirus), and is common in spring and early summer in temperate zones. The latest astounding figures for New Zealand are 50,000 cases per year, 150-200 hospitalisations and 1 or 2 deaths1.
Chickenpox is spread either by droplet infection or contact with the spots of a person with chicken pox. The incubation period is 2 – 3 weeks, during which time the virus replicates in the lymph nodes, liver and spleen, with a second more intense viraemia occurring just before the rash appears. The infectious period starts one day before the rash appears and continues until the scabs fall off..
Chickenpox usually occurs in children under the age of ten with the peak age between 2 and 6 years. 90% of the population has been infected by the age of 15. Two percent of chickenpox cases are reported in adults, but 25-50% of the deaths.
SYMPTOMS:
Shortly before the rash appears, the infected person may have a temperature of about 38.5°C, not feel like eating, be tired, and have photophobia. The rash usually appears on the body and spreads to arms, legs, face and scalp. In
some children, the rash can spread into the mouth, and in girls, it can cause discomfort in the vagina. At first the rash is pimple-like, but quickly turns into blisters, which, after a few days, scab over. The scabs then fall off, and should leave little or no scarring.
Chickenpox is usually self limiting with low morbidity and mortality in healthy children. However, in babies under 1 month (where the mortality rate is 20%), adults and immunocompromised children the following should be noted:
COMPLICATIONS (rarely seen in normal healthy children):
A high and prolonged fever is a good predictor of how severe the disease will be, and may be associated with severe complications:
Pneumonia – usual cause in adults is Staphylococcus aureas
Bacterial superinfection and encephalitis (rare in children)
Reye’s syndrome, mainly associated with the use of aspirin to control fever and pain
Otitis media
EXTREMELY RARE COMPLICATIONS:
Osteomyelitis, necrotising fasciitis, toxic shock syndrome, Guillain-Barré Syndrome, carditis, uveitis, myocarditis, bullous varicella, septic arthritis, deep tissue abscess, Group A beta-haemolytic streptococcus, nephritis, orchitis, thrombocytopenia, fulminant hepatitis, acute cerebellar ataxia, premature labour (pregnant women only).
0.7 – 2% of births to women infected in the first 4 months of gestation lead to congenital varicella syndrome – chorioretinitis, ocular defects, cutaneous scars, hypoplastic limbs, micrognathia, encephalomyelitis, cortical atrophy, and pneumonitis2.
Most doctors have never seen any of these, and would consider discussion of them laughable. However, lest we should be accused of being simplistic, and in the interests of total disclosure, we believe you should know all the information.
A recent American study showed that 6% of admissions for the complications of varicella were musculoskeletal disorders ranging from necrotising fasciitis to toxic-shock syndrome requiring multiple amputations2. Complications were not related to severity of chickenpox. Since the routine mantra from medical people to parents is ‘paracetamol for fevers’ despite medical literature clearly demonstrating that such advice is highly dangerous; since the majority or parents follow such advice unquestioningly; and since necrotising fasciitis has primarily been associated with people who regularly pop paracetamol and other anti-inflammatory drugs, it is hardly surprising.
IMMUNE SYSTEM RESPONSES:
Both cell-mediated (Th1) and humoral (Th2) immune responses stop the virus replication (antibody alone does not guarantee total immunity). The most important immune response is the Th1 response which is cell mediated immunity (search and destroy the virus), but the precise laboratory markers of that immunity are unknown3 . This is why people with agammaglobulinaemia (no antibody production) usually have uncomplicated chickenpox, whereas people with defective cell-mediated (or search and destroy immunity) can die from chickenpox.
Treatment for chickenpox: (and the costs)
NATURAL MEDICINE:
Because chickenpox is a virus, vitamins A and C are the treatment of choice. The dosages required depend on the individual child. Total cost would be no more than$50.00.
Keep the skin clean and cool with frequent baths using 1 cup baking soda or 5 drops lavender essential oil in the bath water. Rubbing the juice from the fresh stems of aloe vera can also help the itching23, 24.
Sleep and rest with plenty of fluids is the best cure, as for all viral infections. Keep children away from others while they are infectious, especially older people, as exposure to chicken pox may bring on a case of shingles.
Aromatherapy
Add 5 drops tea tree, 5 drops chamomile, 5 drops lavender and 5 drops bergamot essential oils to 50ml rose water or chamomile tea and apply to the spots to help stop itching. Re-mix well before each application25.
Use 2 drops lavender, 2 drops roman chamomile and 2 drops bergamot essential oils in the bath, especially for under 5 year olds25
Costs for essential oils vary depending on the oil. If buying essential oils, the label should always state 100% pure essential oil, the country of origin and a use by date. Do not buy fragrant oils, as they do not have the therapeutic value, being artificial substitutes in most cases. As a guide, a 10ml bottle of lavender oil will probably cost around $20.
Homoeopathy
Antimonium tartaricum – for use when the child is bad-tempered and the spots are slow in coming out. The child will have a white-coated tongue.
Pulsatilla – for use when the child is clingy and whiny with a low fever. The itch is worse for heat.
Rhus toxicodendron – use when the tongue is coated white or yellowy white and has a red tip which may be sore. The spots are maddeningly itchy and the child very restless.
Sulphur – use if the child is generally restless, sweaty and feverish and the spots are severe, very red and much worse for heat. The spots become crusty, smelly and weep after scratching. Sulphur may also be needed where recovery from the illness is slow.
Varicella 200c (nosode) – use to help clear a severe case or for lingering after-effects of the disease. Do
not use while disease is incubating26, 27.
Cell Salts
Ferr Phos – when fever, irritability and discomfort are present.
Kali Mur – After the fever has passed, usually with white or greyish white coated tongue. Spots filled with whitish substance.
Calc Sulph – where the eruptions have yellow infected-looking discharge.
Kali Sulph – use when the spots have finished coming out and alternate with Ferr Phos to promote perspiration.
Dosages: Two celloids of the required remedy every half-hour in the early stage, less frequently once the fever has subsided28.
Costs for homoeopathic remedies and cell salts are very reasonable, usually around $5 - $10 per bottle.
PHARMACEUTICAL MEDICINE:
Zovirax (Acyclovir), foscarnet or Vidarabine for older children. Dosage = 20 mg/kg of body weight with a maximum of 800 mgs for 5 days = $170.00.
For the immunocompromised, Zovirax for 7 days intravenously minimum costs = $3,300.
For Zovirax resistant virus, foscarnet (Foscavir) 40 mg/kg IV x 10 days + $2,100. (Not FDA approved.)
Anti-histamines, paracetamol and sometimes, corticosteroids such as prednisone are used.
With regard to drug treatment, the following extract speaks volumes:
A POX ON ACYCLOVIR:
Newspapers and TV gave a big play to the supposed efficacy of huge (and expensive) dosages of oral acyclovir for treatment of otherwise normal children with chickenpox when the reports appeared a few months ago (New Engl. J Med. 1991; 325:1539). We were mostly impressed with the fact that, if you have large enough numbers of study patients, you can make clinically insignificant differences highly statistically significant. Now the report of acyclovir versus placebo for adolescents with chickenpox has appeared (J Pediatr 1992; 120:627.) Once again clinically insignificant or marginally significant differences favouring acyclovir are statistically significant. The dosage was 800 mg 4 times daily for 5 days (compared with 200 mg 5 times daily used for genital herpes simplex infection)10.
